The story

Chapter I

A grid should reduce the search

A useful grid makes a page easier to enter. It lets a reader recognise the title, find a reference and compare a row with the row below it. Index begins there, with the ordinary work of finding and checking information. It does not begin with a red rectangle placed beside a large number because that arrangement resembles a poster. The result should feel calm even when the content is complicated, and it should remain understandable when the most striking display element is removed.

The Design Museum's survey of Swiss graphic design includes posters, typography, advertising and corporate work. The Swiss National Library describes the Zurich approach through geometry, asymmetry, clear spacing and minimal information. These sources support a tradition of organising communication. They do not support a claim that one designer invented the grid, or that every useful contemporary sans-serif interface is a historical Swiss design. Index uses the tradition as a demanding reference for relationships and hierarchy, not as a badge attached to an ordinary default theme.

Chapter II

Show the record and its source

The planned signatures are an index table, a document outline, a filter ledger, a citation row and a type specimen. They are chosen because technical libraries and reference catalogs need more than a clean card. A record may have a title, a revision, a source and a state. Those fields should be aligned without becoming visually identical. A filter should explain what changed and preserve a route back to the full collection. A citation should be useful text, not an ornamental superscript that cannot be reached on a phone.

Archivo is proposed for the main voice and IBM Plex Mono for identifiers and compact technical material. Both have open licences. Helvetica and Univers remain historical references, not files included in a commercial package. The light palette reserves red for a clear action, while the dark palette uses a tested lighter counterpart. A border that marks an input has a stronger contrast obligation than a decorative hairline. High density does not justify tiny hit targets, faint labels or a horizontal table that a keyboard user cannot reach.

Chapter III

Earn the difference from the default

Index faces the strongest competitive challenge in this catalog. Neutral blocks, clean forms and orderly dashboards are already widely available in shadcn-based libraries. It should not be sold merely because a preset has square corners and one red accent. Its value has to be visible in complete document tasks: navigating a long outline, checking provenance, comparing revisions, printing a useful reference and switching between comfortable and compact presentation without losing accessibility. These are proposed behaviours that still need implementation and proof.

The original asset set will be limited to grid templates, rules and specimen layouts, rather than famous concert-poster reproductions. No historic composition will be traced into a new cover and called original. Index is intended for serious records, technical documentation and B2B reference surfaces. It is not the first choice for a richly illustrated portfolio or for a product whose value depends on a strongly decorative identity. Restraint is useful only when it serves the reader; it is not an excuse for an unfinished system.

Index remains a draft and is not yet available as a complete pack. Check back if document and citation workflows are useful to your work. A future notice will identify the actual component scope and delivery terms when those are ready. No price, release date or purchase obligation is created by checking back, and this proposal does not certify any unbuilt interface.
