Playroom
An adult-designed playful system, with decorative freedom outside the task.

The story
A playful page can still be considerate
A playful interface does not need to keep moving. It can be welcoming through scale, colour, an unexpected interval and the way it explains a choice. Playroom starts with those quieter possibilities. The decoration lives around the task rather than inside the task's instructions. A person should be able to find an activity, compare two options or return to a previous step without first learning which of several bouncing shapes is supposed to be a button.
The Design Museum's account of Memphis and the Victoria and Albert Museum's account of Postmodernism describe deliberate challenges to modernist restraint. Colour, asymmetry, patterned surfaces and unusual form were part of that argument. Playroom studies the permission to make an ordinary object feel unexpected. It does not reproduce a Memphis object or claim that a few bright shapes are the whole of that history. The proposed violet palette is an interface decision, not a historical colour standard or a licence to copy a recognisable pattern.
Keep the choice steady
The proposed activity card puts the activity, audience information and practical details in a stable order. A shape stepper can show a short sequence, but the sequence must also be explained in text. A choice grid uses the same control behaviour across its options, even if the surrounding composition is varied. A workshop schedule needs real times and clear availability. A playful empty state should tell someone what they can do next, not merely display a character or a decorative apology.
Fredoka is proposed for short display moments, paired with Source Sans 3 for reading and controls. Both are open-licensed. The system uses one action accent and tested foreground pairs, rather than scattering different meanings across every colour. A rounded shape does not exempt a control from an adequate target size, a visible focus indicator or a clear disabled state. Optional brief feedback follows a person's action. Nothing auto-plays, and the reduced-motion version presents the same complete task without an animation gap.
Original play, not borrowed characters
The asset set will consist of original geometric compositions and letter-free backgrounds. It will not include the Memphis Milano name or logo, a copy of the Bacterio pattern, a Sottsass object silhouette or a familiar toy-brand character. Learning from a movement is not the same as buying permission to reproduce its commercially identifiable work. The same rule applies to a generated concept: a prompt must describe the intended relationships, not ask for a living artist's signature style.
Playroom is intended for museum activities, family programmes and low-stakes creative learning. That description is not a claim that the system meets child-privacy, safety or developmental requirements. Those depend on the actual product and its users. It is not a sensible default for financial decisions or safety-critical information. Existing libraries already offer sweet palettes and animated effects. The proposed difference here is a calm, accessible activity flow that can be playful without becoming noisy or treating the visitor's attention as a resource to spend.
Playroom is a draft and is not yet available to purchase as a complete system. Check back if this kind of activity-led interface would be useful to you. A future notice will explain the actual scope and terms when there is a release to inspect. No date, price, child-suitability certification or purchase obligation is promised by checking back.
