The story
Make the first line count
A broadside has very little time to establish what matters. The event, the place, the object for sale, or the instruction has to be found before the reader decides to move on. Ink takes that directness seriously. A strong heading is followed by useful details, not by another heading competing for attention. Its indigo ground and firm outlines are a way of organising a compact message. They are not a request to set an entire interface in shouting capitals.
Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum explains the practical appeal of wooden letters for large-format printing. Letterform Archive's account of Victorian wood type describes the extremes of size, width, weight and ornament that advertising encouraged. Those sources establish a material and commercial history. They do not establish one universal nineteenth-century look. Ink therefore does not promise a historically exact poster. It translates scale, contrast and economical emphasis into a contemporary interface that still needs to be readable and usable.
A stamp should behave like a button
The stamp button is the starting fragment, not the whole product. A visible outline gives it a boundary; spacing gives its short label room to breathe; a clear pressed state confirms an action. The eventual system must also show what happens when the action is unavailable, when a request fails, and when a keyboard user arrives. The feeling of a printed impression is optional. The explanation of what the control does is not. A disabled control cannot carry the entire purchase journey.
Anton is proposed for compact display headings and Source Serif 4 for longer reading. Both are open-licensed families, rather than scans of wood-type specimens converted into a new font. Only a small number of type roles will be used together. A ledger row can align an amount, a date and a status without requiring a visitor to interpret decorative leader dots. A ticket can distinguish the event from the booking conditions. These are transactional relationships, and they have to survive ordinary awkward content.
Leave the pastiche behind
Ink is intended for independent events, ticket-led commerce, editions and programmes that need a confident public voice. Its proposed signatures include a broadside header, a ledger table, a ticket row and an issue badge. A restrained set of original rules and ink textures can support those patterns. Grain belongs to imagery, not to a small price, a form field or the only readable copy of a command. There is no value in making someone struggle to read information in order to appreciate the reference.
Historic advertising also contains material that should not be revived as innocent decoration. Ink will not use racial caricature, colonial trade imagery or borrowed circus artwork. A pointing-hand ornament is not an excuse to copy a modern redraw with its own rights. The proposed assets will be made afresh and credited appropriately. Nor is a thick border, by itself, a complete distinction from existing neo-brutalist themes. The useful difference has to be a coherent set of event, receipt and edition patterns.
Ink remains a draft, not an available complete system. The existing stamp-button fragment does not establish that the rest of the collection has been built or that a purchase can be completed. Check back if this is the kind of system you would use. A future availability notice will explain what is actually included; no release date, price or order is promised here.
